Editorial Best Practices on Gender Equality

Use of Inclusive and Non-Sexist Language

SPORTIS Sci J follows an editorial policy that includes specific recommendations in favor of the use of inclusive language in scientific articles. Authors should use terms that refer to all genders, such as: students, teachers, childhood, people, human beings, teaching staff, or research staff. Authors are also required to include both surnames of all individuals who participated in the research.

In line with our editorial policy, we strongly recommend the use of inclusive and non-sexist language in scientific articles. These recommendations are designed to ensure that all published works respect and reflect the diversity of the scientific community, promoting equality and avoiding any form of discrimination.

Writing Guidelines

  • Use of neutral pronouns: Use inclusive forms that encompass all genders when referring to individuals in general.
  • Avoid gender stereotypes: Write in a way that avoids traditional gender roles and stereotypes.
  • Gender-neutral language: Prefer neutral terms such as "people" instead of "men" or "women", unless specification is necessary.
  • Equitable recognition: Acknowledge the contributions of all individuals involved in the research, regardless of gender.
  • Forms of reference: Use full names and professional titles rather than surnames only, to avoid gender bias.

These recommendations are aligned with the journal’s commitment to equity and diversity in science. We appreciate the cooperation of all authors in implementing these practices in their manuscripts.

Consideration of Sex as a Research Variable

Authors are encouraged, when their studies include sex as a variable, to indicate whether their conclusions take into account potential differences between sexes.
