Abstract

Executive functions and coping strategies are key psychological variables in the development of mental health. Previous research suggests that physical activity may benefit both processes; however, findings are not always consistent, partly due to methodological limitations in the assessment of physical activity. In this context, assessing specific physical capacities through non-invasive tests offers a more objective way to examine the relationship between physical fitness and mental health outcomes. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between lower-body strength, executive functions, and coping strategies, as well as the mediating role of executive functions in this relationship, in adolescent amateur athletes (n = 34). Lower-body strength was assessed using the Countermovement Jump (CMJ); cognitive flexibility and working memory were measured using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the Self-Directed Pointing subtest of the Neuropsychological Battery of Executive Functions (BANFE-II); and coping strategies were assessed with the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI). Results indicated that higher CMJ performance was associated with better executive functioning, which in turn was related to greater use of engagement coping strategies. These findings suggest that the psychological benefits of physical activity depend more on the development of specific physical capacities than on mere sport participation, as well as on improvements in higher-order cognitive processes.
