Regional healthy lifestyle programs in the Spanish school context: a scoping review based on the NAOS Strategy

Promoting healthy lifestyle habits during adolescence is an educational and public health priority due to its influence on students’ present and future well-being. In Spain, the NAOS Strategy provides an institutional framework aimed at promoting balanced nutrition and regular physical activity among school-aged populations. The aim of this study was to analyze, through a scoping review, regional programs and initiatives promoting healthy lifestyle habits among adolescents in the Spanish school context, assessing their documentary alignment with the objectives of the NAOS Strategy and describing their main characteristics, available resources, and evaluation and follow-up systems. A scoping review was conducted through a systematic search of the institutional websites of the 17 Autonomous Communities, applying previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Variables related to objectives, contents, resources, documentary availability, evaluation, and follow-up were analyzed. The results identified 13 Healthy Lifestyle Programs and 32 complementary resources, unevenly distributed across territories. A high documentary presence of contents related to awareness-raising, nutrition education, and physical activity promotion was observed, whereas evaluation and follow-up showed insufficient development. It is concluded that the Autonomous Communities show broad availability of institutional initiatives linked to the NAOS Strategy, although relevant shortcomings remain in systematization, documentary transparency, and program evaluation.
