The hybridization of pedagogical models represents a promising line of research in Physical Education (PE) aimed at overcoming the limitations of traditional teacher-centered approaches. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in the four Basic Psychological Needs (BPN): autonomy, competence, relatedness, and novelty, following a hybrid pedagogical unit combining the Sport Education Model (SEM) and gamification, integrated with Formative and Shared Assessment (F&SA). To the authors' knowledge, no previous work has explored the hybridization of these three specific frameworks in a field hockey unit. Participants were 77 secondary school students (45 girls and 32 boys, aged 14–15) from three different classes. A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design without a control group was employed. The intervention consisted of ten lessons of 50 minutes each, delivered twice per week. The BPNES questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention. Inferential analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and effect sizes were calculated using the Rank-Biserial Correlation (rrb). Results showed significant increases in all variables: autonomy (p < .001), competence (p < .001), relatedness (p = .003), and novelty (p < .001). Large effect sizes were observed for autonomy (rrb = −.54), competence (rrb = −.59), and novelty (rrb = −.79), while a moderate effect was observed for relatedness (rrb = −.43). In conclusion, the hybrid approach was associated with improvements in students’ satisfaction of autonomy, competence, relatedness, and novelty. However, because SEM, gamification, and F&SA were implemented simultaneously and no control group was included, their individual contributions cannot be determined.
