This paper describes the global development of literature about plyometric exercise with the purpose of improving the strength and explosive force of the lower limbs. A combined systematic review with bibliometric analysis was carried out in the literature of Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases for the period of 2001-2025. The PRISMA-2020 protocol guided the systematic review procedure. A total of 14 experimental and quasi-experimental studies were selected for the systematic review, together with 784 articles analyzed in the bibliometric analysis with VOS_viewer. The outcome of the analysis showed an increased rate of published literature after the year 2017, particularly among authors from Europe and authors from Oceania, with an emphasis changing from mechanism-oriented studies towards performance-related studies. With the literature analysis of improvements in force, speed, and functionality of the lower limbs of varying ages and sports situations, it can accordingly be concluded that the literature about plyometric exercise has indeed developed extensively around the globe with explicit efficiency while emphasizing new studies about optimal dosages.
