Abstract

mHealth-based exercise interventions have shown positive effects on physical fitness; however, their application in developing countries and among working populations remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an mHealth-based exercise program on physical fitness and anthropometric indicators in overweight administrative and academic employees from a Chilean university. An 8-week non-randomized controlled study was conducted. A total of 41 women (mean age 42.05 ± 10.11 years) participated and were assigned to an experimental group (n=22), which performed three weekly exercise sessions via mHealth, and a control group (n=19), which maintained their usual activities. Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength (handgrip, abdominal, and leg strength), anthropometry, and body composition were assessed. The experimental group showed significant improvements in muscular strength (p<0.001), aerobic capacity assessed by the 6-minute walk test (p<0.001), and maximal oxygen consumption (p=0.002). Regarding anthropometric indicators, body mass index remained stable in the experimental group but increased in the control group (p=0.004). No significant changes were observed in heart rate, oxygen saturation, or perceived exertion.
The mHealth-based exercise program was effective in improving aerobic capacity and muscular strength, as well as in preventing increases in body mass index in university employees. These findings support the use of digital interventions as viable strategies for health promotion in workplace settings.
